The Government has decided to remove the time limit for people making claims about childhood sexual abuse. This means victims can ask for compensation whenever they are ready, without worrying about being too late.
The Government has decided to remove the time limit for people making claims about childhood sexual abuse. This means victims can ask for compensation whenever they are ready, without worrying about being too late.
Childhood sexual abuse cases are very different from other injury claims because it can take a long time for victims to speak about what happened. Having a time limit was unfair and could cause more distress if someone’s claim was rejected for being ‘out of time’.
A new law called the Crime and Policing Act 2026 was agreed on 29th April. From 29th June 2026, victims can make claims without facing time limit rules, provided their claim hasn’t already been started or dismissed by a court. However, the court can still reject a claim if it isn’t possible to have a fair trial.
At Morecrofts, we help victims make claims against organisations like schools, social services, or religious groups if they are responsible for abuse. If you want to talk to someone about historic abuse, please call 0151 236 8871. We promise to listen and support you in a safe and respectful way.
