In a landmark move, Apple have released a digital legacy feature, which will allow account holders to nominate people to access their account after they die.
Senior associate solicitor Helen Robins said: “Until now, court orders have been required to gain access to a deceased person’s digital data.
“In the modern world we live in, people keep so much on digital devices which has both sentimental and monetary value.
“This could be family photographs, videos or music collections. It’s rare that people now have printed photos or CDs for family members to enjoy, so having this legacy feature on Apple really paves the way. It’s such a positive move and I expect other tech giants will follow.”
Account holders can nominate up to five family members or friends who will be able to access their account after they die.
These contacts, if they have a copy of the death certificate will be given a code allowing them to access data stored in the iCloud which I am sure will be a welcomed by many families.
