Who is Taking Care of the #ManOnTheMoon?

By Faye Kelshaw

Today saw the release of the ever-anticipated John Lewis Christmas Advert.

The ad, which is currently the top trend on Twitter with the hashtag #ManOnTheMoon sees a young girl discover a lonely elderly gentleman on the moon through her telescope.

She tries hard to reach him to show him she can see him through her telescope but with no luck. This is of course, until Christmas Day, when she manages to send him a gift tied to a cluster of balloons.

The man opens the box to discover a telescope and then looks through to discover the little girl. Cue the emotional tears and Christmas happiness.

This year though, the marketing gurus at John Lewis HQ have touched on a serious issue – social isolation.

This is a subject which often comes up in the winter time. Usually it’s elderly people who are left isolated at home and rely on sporadic visits from carers for some interaction or company.

Much of the time this is because there might be no one to take care of them, or they have never thought ahead as to what they want to happen if they get to the point where help is going to be needed on a regular basis.

Please don’t hesitate to consider your future.  Ask yourself whether you have made provision for yourself in your twilight years.  Certainly one way of planning for your future is to empower your loved ones to be able to act on your behalf in the event that you need their assistance, either in relation to your finances or your welfare.

Our Man on the Moon was lucky to have a determined little girl who went to many lengths to get to him.  Make it easy for your loved ones; put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place.  You can appoint professionals in relation to your finances for peace of mind that somebody will be there for you.

Once again, John Lewis have released a cracker of a Christmas promotion. Now let’s see what their competitors come up with over the next week…

If you have not seen it yet, you can watch it here.
