Divorce January – Start as you mean to go on.

By Carole Brennan<

The press are reporting the increase in people seeking a divorce in January.

This happens every year and there are many theories as to why it happens, but for whatever reason it is a peak time for clients making appointments and divorce petitions being issued.New year, new start people may be thinking but it is important to go about it in the right way so you don’t end the year poorer, more unhappy and wondering what went wrong. Before you see a Solicitor or Mediator, ask yourself, “what are my priorities” and don’t lose sight of them.

For many people, children come first and if that is the case then try not to make their experience of parental separation any worse than it need be. Find out what helps children through this experience, look at good websites like, cafcass.gov.uk or oneplusone.org.uk.

If you are having difficulty communicating, try mediation where a neutral family mediator can help you work on that and also help sort out what is to happen to your children and your money. It is important to obtain legal advice so you know what you are entitled to and what your options are.

People worry about the costs but you can get details of fees and opt for fixed fees if you feel that will suit you more. Talking to someone who is very experienced will help you take the emotion out of things and help you make good decisions for your and your children’s future. Try not to take advice off people who are not going to help you because they are emotionally involved and don’t let negative emotions like anger rule your head. That will only result in bad decisions.

If you are not coping, go and see your GP as they will be able to signpost you to some help and support.

You need a solicitor or mediator who is sympathetic, experienced and can talk you through your options in a clear and informative way who will help you make the best decisions for your life and that of your children.
