First anniversary of the Children and Families Act Legislation.

By Carole Brennan

Today, the 22nd April 2015 is the first anniversary of the Children and Families Act Legislation that made it compulsory for separating couples seeking a Court Order to first attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting  (MIAM).

How is it doing one year on?  Our experience is that more couples are coming and finding out about mediation and are discovering its benefits and that they can sort things out themselves with a little help froman expert mediator.  They are resolving things more quickly, cheaply and with the benefit of better communication with the other party long term they and their children are happier.

There are still some people who think a MIAM is a step they have to do to go to Court but the majority meeting the Mediator can see the benefit for themselves.

Lets hope that the culture of divorce and separation will continue to change in the best interests of everyone concerned, particularly children.
