A growing trend in marriage

By Darren White

Actress Zoe Saldana was in the press last week defending her husband, who decided to take her surname when they got married recently. The man taking the woman’s name is a growing trend, but many people still seem to be against the idea.

In my opinion though, if both parties are happy with the decision, why shouldn’t the husband choose to adopt his wife’s surname?

There are of course many reasons for why a woman may want to keep her maiden name, such as for professional reasons or to preserve a family surname.

Sometimes the husband might want to change his own name for a reason as simple as it sounds better than his own original surname.

Another growing trend appears to be the hyphenation of couples’ surnames.  This process allows the couple to retain both surnames.  This approach is often adopted within the family courts when considering applications for a change in a child’s surname, giving the child the identity of both parents.

The process of changing your name is quite straightforward and can be done in a few minutes.  Of course what should be kept in mind is that by changing your surname you are not in some way “bound” to keep this for the rest of your life.  Rather the opposite, it can be changed back with the same ease as it was changed in the first place.

People should be free to choose any name which they want.
