Nullity

In some exceptional cases it is possible to bring to an end a relationship through nullity proceedings. In order to achieve an annulment of a marriage certain criteria has to be satisfied to establish whether or not the marriage legally exists.

There are very specific grounds upon which a marriage can be annulled. This is quite a technical area of law and we would not advise an individual to attempt an annulment petition without the assistance of a lawyer. If the annulment is dealt with correctly from the outset the procedure is straightforward and similar to that of a divorce.

Although at the conclusion of a nullity petition the court makes an order which in effect means the marriage never existed, the court still has the power to deal with financial issues arising from the marriage.
