Domestic abuse victims given more time to report assaults

The government has announced that domestic abuse victims in England and Wales are to be given more time to report assaults.

Julie Waring, a domestic abuse specialist and partner at Morecrofts commented: “Having represented victims of domestic abuse of all genders over two decades, I have seen the law evolve to protect and support victims.

“It’s widely recognised that the time limitations currently in place are wholly inadequate – that being six months from the date of the offence for those subjected to common assault within a relationship. The proposal to change it to six months from the date of reporting the assault (not exceeding two years) is welcomed. This in my opinion strikes a fair balance to those wishing to bring a perpetrator of domestic abuse to justice.”
